Does the inside of your warehouse look like Night of the Living Dead? Is there dead stock cluttering the racks and shelves? Halloween can be more than just a holiday to play dress up. It can be the unofficial gateway to the dressing up your warehouse, cleaning out that dead stock and getting a handle on your inventory control software so that the space in your warehouse can serve its intended purpose: earning you revenue! Here are some great tips for offloading that zombie stock so that you can enter the warehouse safe from the monsters lurking in those dark shelves …

Incentivize your sales staff to offload the zombies

Before dead stock becomes zombified, it gets slow. When your inventory control software indicates that sales of a particular item are starting to grind to a halt, it’s time to incentivize your sales staff to get it sold before it eats your cash flow. Sales folks have a habit of wanting to talk only about the latest and greatest stuff. Incentivize them to offload slow-selling stock so that you move what you can before the sales completely stop.

Put together a hauntingly good bundle deal

Often, if your inventory control software alerts you that an item isn’t selling so well, you can bundle it with a hot seller and move it rather quickly. For instance, if you’ve got several crates of squeegees back there that won’t sell, bundle those with your top selling window wash for a spooky good deal. Alternately, you can lose less money per item to sell several of the poor-selling items together for a break in the price, as opposed to offloading each for a loss.

Send your zombie stock back from whence it came

Vendors will usually take back the zombie stock if you don’t wait too long. You might have to purchase an equal amount of new stock to achieve the vendor’s buyback, but having $5,000 worth of fast selling inventory is much better than being stuck with $5,000 worth of stock that you couldn’t sell to Dr. Frankenstein for monster parts. The key is to get it back to the vendor as soon as possible. They might not take stock that’s too terribly old, or they may want to charge you repackaging fees for damaged boxes or packaging that’s a foot deep in dust. Unless it’s Halloween decorations you’ve got, cobwebs aren’t great sellers. It’s essential to have inventory control software that can help you identify poor sellers before this becomes a problem.

Consider making a scary sweet charitable contribution

One option that many warehouse managers simply don’t think of is donating unsellable stock to charities. Depending on what kind of inventory you’re offloading, many items are tremendously useful to charities — such as building materials to Habitat for Humanity or pet products to a local animal shelter or electrical supplies to a mission working to help rebuild Haiti. Almost anything you might have to get rid of, there is someone somewhere who could use it. If you donate inventory to a 501(c) organization, your contribution is tax deductible.

Turn to the monsters at large

Another seldom-used option for offloading horrifyingly old stock is to offer it to the public. Depending on what kind of inventory you have, you can offer it via classified ads like Craigslist or even through auction. Alternately, you can allow an established liquidator or auction house to sell off your spooky old inventory items.
