Forecast calls for sunny holiday retail sales

By | ERP, Manufacturing, News | No Comments

While consumers wish for a White Christmas, retailers are hoping for sunny skies. Could both get their wishes?

Clear skies for retail sales over the holidays?

The National Retail Federation (NRF), the biggest retail trade association in the world, issues an annual forecast in anticipation of the upcoming holiday season. 2016 is looking up which is great news for retailers and other companies that depend on those November through December sales! Do you have the enterprise resource planning software you need to keep pace?

It’s not the NRF’s first sunny forecast since the Great Recession

The NRF uses multiple sources to assemble their holiday sales predictions, including consumer credit information, the levels of disposable personal incomes, and sales figures from the previous quarters in the year.

This year, the NRF predicts that holiday sales for retail businesses will climb by 3.6 percent to an estimated $656 million. This is a reasonable improvement from the ten-year average of just 2.5 percent and it surpasses the average for the past seven years of 3.4 percent. In fact, it’s the sunniest outlook since the onset of the Great Recession, which began an arduously slow recovery in 2009.

Sunny with a chance of passing clouds

Most notable to warehousing and logistics managers, the forecast for e-commerce is particularly promising.

Once again, e-commerce should be leading the way, with expected sales according to the NRF rising by seven to ten percent. It should reach about $117 billion, a 10.3 percent improvement over last year’s numbers. It’s important to note that these predictions have been slightly off in the past couple of years, however. The NRF predicted a rise of 3.7 percent in 2015 and an attractive 4.1 percent in 2014, but the actual numbers were closer to a gain of just over three percent for e-commerce sales. Increased sales have pushed more retailers, e-commerce businesses, warehouses, and related industries to invest in enterprise resource planning software, which helps considerably when sales rise, even by just three percent.

According to a chef economist for the NRF, Jack Kleinhenz,
“Consumers have seen steady job and income gains throughout the year, resulting in continued confidence and the greater use of credit, which bodes well for more spending throughout the holiday season. Increased geopolitical uncertainty, the presidential election outcome and unseasonably warm weather are the main issues at play with the greatest potential to shake consumer confidence and impact shopping patterns. However, the economic spending power of the consumer is resilient and it should never be underestimated.”
Retailers and other businesses anticipating the 2016 holiday season need to be aware that there are still factors at play that could cause numbers to again be less than anticipated. For instance, economic growth and activity are still quite unstable, the GDP is lackluster, inventory levels are still too high, and the employment rates have fluctuated in unstable ways. Not to mention potential responses to the general elections.

How Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software can help

Even taking all of those factors into consideration, there is an overall optimism across most industries. According to Kleinhenz, better data analytics (such as through the use of enterprise resource planning software) and a heavier focus on customer centricity should counterbalance any negative factors.

Enterprise resource planning software helps warehouses, retailers, inventory control specialists, and other industries and professionals navigate the holiday season and every season by delivering top-notch business intelligence in real time across the entire supply chain. Is your software ready to keep up with the sunny times ahead? If you aren’t sure, contact us at NexTec for assistance.
